Joseph Hindley

From the original post about his father Robert, we established that Joseph had been listed on the membership records of the Leigh Branch as a child, but eventually had the words "cut off" written on his line.  He was born in 1841 in Leigh, married Rachael Taylor 5 Jan 1868 in Manchester, and had two known children, Robert (1868) and Sarah Ann (1871).  A search was made in the GRO birth and death indexes, and one additional possible child (unproven) is Ann, born and died 1st quarter of 1868 in the Manchester district with a mother whose maiden name was Taylor.  FamilySearch has burial records for Failsworth but they are not available online, so they would need to be searched in the library in order to assess whether there is proof of this Ann being Joseph and Rachael's child.

Robert

FamilySearch Tree included detail about Robert's wife Emma Elizabeth Crossley and their children, Elsie (1895), Robert (1898), Wilfred (1900), and Gladys (1902), all of whom are available for a relative to provide ordinances for them.  The 1911 census, however, mentions that this family had 5 children, not 4.  Two had passed away by then, including Gladys since the other three older children were noted on the census but she was not.  A GRO search located the following in the Prestwich District:

  • Elsie born 2nd quarter 1895
  • Robert born 3rd quarter 1897
  • Wilfred born 4th quarter 1899
  • Enid born 2nd quarter 1901 (who died 3rd quarter of 1901, age 0)
  • Gladys born 3rd quarter 1902

Enid has now been added to the family in the Tree and could be sealed to parents.

The 1921 Census was also added as a source for the family, and it shows the three living children as single (in their 20s).  An interesting source surfaced through FamilySearch hints, as well:

It is a record of the family's grave plot in Failsworth including their ages and dates of interment.  These burial dates were also added to FamilySearch's Tree.

Of the three children who lived on, none have yet been positively identified in additional records, so their posterity is unknown.

Sarah Ann

The posterity of Sarah Ann had been researched and documented in FamilySearch up to the early 1900s.  One of the spouses of a descendant (Ivy Haslam) was even related to our family, so ordinances were performed.

But of all of Joseph's descendants, only 1 was newly discovered (Enid).  Totals to this points are:

*68 people added to the Tree from Robert Hindley's Family = 273 potential ordinances
