Robert Hindley

On April 3, 1857, while visiting in the Leigh Branch of the Manchester Conference, Elder Mark Forscutt recorded in his journal: "visited Bro Hindley & wife with whom I had some conversation and engaged in prayer ..."

I have not uncovered any other reference to the Hindleys from Leigh Branch in missionary journals.  With such limited detail, it is very fortunate that the Leigh Branch membership records survive.  They include only one Hindley family, that of Robert Hindley, which makes the couple in this journal entry identifiable.  He appears in the records multiple times.  His parents are reportedly Joseph Hindley and Catherine Newgent.  According to the records, Robert was born February 7, 1814 in Bedford or Leigh, was baptized in the Leigh Branch by Charles E. Walsh on March 13, 1855, was confirmed by Joseph Moss, held the office of elder, and died on February 12, 1883.

Three of his children are noted as members of the Leigh Branch, as well.  (Some research outside of membership records was required to conclude that they were his children.)
  • Eunice
  • Joseph (whose parents are named: Robert Hindley & Elizabeth Daniels); he is also noted to be "cut off" eventually.
  • Loas (Robert Hindley is noted to be her father, her birthdate is stated to be March 8, 1848 in Leigh, and she was baptized in the Leigh Branch on August 9, 1862 by C.E. Walsh and confirmed by her father.)

After corroborating censuses, civil registration records, Church of England marriage records, and gravestone inscriptions, Robert's family timeline (including two wives and TEN children) became clear:

7 Feb 1814 - Robert was born in Leigh (or Bedford)
Mid-1830s - Robert married Elizabeth ("Betty") Daniels who was about the same age as him
1838 - Eunice was born
1841 - Joseph was born
1841 Census - Robert & Betty were silk weavers living in Leigh
1843 - Catherine was born
1845 - Catherine died (age 1)
1846 - James was born
8 Mar 1848 - Lois (or "Loas") was born
1848-1851 - Elizabeth died (age 32-38) leaving Robert a widower
1851 Census - Robert lived on Smithy Street in Pennington, Leigh, a silk weaver on "parish relief" with children Eunice, Joseph, and James (Lois lived with another family as a young nursing child)
1854 - Robert remarried to Ann Richardson
1854 - William was born
13 Mar 1855 - ROBERT WAS BAPTIZED (there is no record that his wife Ann was)
1857 - John Henry was born
3 Apr 1857 - Elder Mark Forscutt records his visit to the "Bro Hindley & wife"
1859 - John Henry died (age 2)
1861 - Alfred John was born
1861 Census - Robert & Ann are silk weavers in Westleigh with sons James, William, and Alfred
1863 - Alfred John died (ages 2)
1863 - Mary was born
1865 - Elizabeth Ann was born
1871 Census - Robert & Ann were silk weavers living at Mrs. Marsh's Houses in Westleigh with children William and Elizabeth A.
1881 Census - At 38 Twist Lane in Westleigh, Robert was a "Coal Carter" and Ann a silk weaver with Elizabeth A. still at home.
12 Feb 1883 - Robert died

Note: The daughter Mary was only noted in a civil registration birth index entry and never on a census with her family.  No obvious death entry was located for her as a child, and she may have been living away from home in the 1871 and 1881 censuses ... but more research would be required to prove it.

Sources and data have been input into FamilySearch's Tree for these people and many of Robert's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  His ID# is KWJ4-V43.

Regarding temple ordinances, as of today, Robert has yet to be sealed to his two wives, and neither of them have had ordinances at all.  All of his ten children, with the exception of Lois, need ordinances offered to them, including the three babies who passed young who could be sealed to parents.  That totals 13 immediate family members.  There are at least 22 additional descendants awaiting ordinances.

35 people researched
138 potential ordinances

p.s. I happen to be related to one of Robert's great-granddaughter's (Ivy Haslam) husband (Harold Ainsworth), which empowers me to reserve their work, so I'm actually able to serve a little piece of this family in the temple!  I also found that Ivy's brother Harry has been reserved by his relative but shared with the temple system, so there's another I can volunteer to serve.
